Are chiropractors doctors?
Chiropractors are doctors of chiropractic or D.C.. This does not mean they are medical doctors! Doctor of chiropractic is a term similar to calling an individual a doctor of English, or economics. Although, to become a doctor in English or economics, you need four additional years of school to supplement a four year college, whereas for chiropractic, you only need to complete 3 years.
So yes, chiropractors are doctors of chiropractic but they are not medical doctors. This is not meant to insult them in any way, but it is a common area of confusion and should be made more clear, especially to prospective patients. For medical doctors, is it required by common law for a patient to get information about one’s medical condition, the options for treatment and the risks associated with those options. Unfortunately, chiropractors are not held to the same standard as physicians, resulting in many chiropractic patients not being given proper Informed Consent. |
